Predicting the impact of the widespread uptake of agroforestry on ecosystems and farm profitability

Deliverable Report 7.22 examines the impacts of the wider uptake of agroforestry. The current deliverable includes a summary of four pieces of research which have been or are about to be submitted for publication. The manuscripts were included in a version of this report sent to the European Commission. The manuscripts will be included in an updated version of this deliverable when they are published.

The first manuscript identifies those regions of Europe where current land use results in the greatest “potential environmental deficits” in terms of issues like soil erosion and organic carbon, water quality, and biodiversity. The first manuscript then examines the potential of agroforestry to address those problems. The second and third manuscripts compare agroforestry, agricultural, and forestry systems in terms of profitability and wider ecosystem services at plot- and landscape-scales. The last manuscript examines the links between land use and fire data in six Mediterranean countries, and identifies the potential for agroforestry to reduce fire risk.
