Identification of Agroforestry Systems and Practices to Model

This report is an output from work-package 6 which addresses the third objective of the AGFORWARD project which is to evaluate innovative agroforestry designs and practices, at a field- and farm-scale. The report provides an initial review of the research questions and innovations that have arisen from 40 agroforestry stakeholder groups created across Europe in 2014. It then determines which research questions and innovations can be usefully addressed by modelling, and which are probably best addressed using a different approach. The report indicates that 60 innovations (out of 130) could potentially be helped by using a biophysical or bio-economic model describing tree-crop interactions. Most of these model-related questions are related to system design and management. The remaining innovations and research questions are probably best addressed using literature reviews, social science methods, policy analysis, or field-based experiments.
