"Acorns are not just for pigs"

 

João Palma, from AGFORWARD, participated in the “Acorn Symposium: The Future of a Food with a Past” on 20 March 2015 (all communications here). The meeting at Herdade do Freixo do Meio in Portugal was organized by Alfredo Sendim, who is a stakeholder in the AGFORWARD project. At the meeting, Manuela Pintado, from the Catholic University of Portugal described the nutritional characteristics of acorns. She explained that they are gluten free and high in antioxidants such as cholorogenic acid which is reported to have anti-cancer properties. Miguel Sottomayor from the same university, estimated a conservative economic potential in Portugal of about 13.3 million Euros.
